Frozen Dishes : life after the ice

a recently retired antarctic worker trying to readjust to life on the outside

Took home a cool $55 this past Monday at poker.  I'm getting close to breaking even now.  Last night I turned over the video tapes to the guy that will be in charge of helping with the editing.   The film festival is next weekend and all submissions are due this coming Monday.  Today I'm trying to plan out my sock puppet movie.  I think I will be able to shoot it all in two days and have Sunday left to edit it.  That is of course if all goes as planned.  Although I don't have much of a plan at the moment.   My motivation is low these days as the winter draws to a close, but I'd like to get a movie in the fetsival if possible.   While driving the loader today I worked on my character voices.   The two characters are spies, one male & the other a woman.   For the first scene I want to show the spies parachuting into mcmurdo.   I still need an ending too.  Tonight is American night at Scott Base, the New Zealand base over the hill.  Each Thursday the kiwis invite whomever wants to come to come over for a visit.  Recreation provides shuttles, so walking is not an issue.  It's great to have a change of scenary and their bar is quite nice.  Plus, they open their store for a few hours too.  They have good candy there.  I'm heading over there tonight for a bit.  This Saturday recreation is throwing a beach party.  That one never seems to be a big hit.  If we had sand here it might be a different story.

This past weekend's band show was great.  For three nights before the show a few of us painted drop cloths to decorate the bar.  It made the place look totally different.  We sectioned off one area and placed couches in it creating a good spot to hang out in.   Some folks showed up in costume and everyone in the band had something on as well.  I opted for a Clockwork Orange-esc type bowler hat and a pair of swim goggles.  The goggles kept fogging up, so that got old pretty fast.  Three members of the band had dresses on and there were many wigs being donned as well.  The band sounded tight even with our limited practices and the fact that all the music was improvised.   It had been too long since I had played the theremin.  I guess I'll have to purchase one once I get home.  Won $15 at poker Monday.  I haven't lost in a few weeks and am getting close to breaking even for the season now.  Last night I shot the last scene for the video some friends are making for the upcoming film festival.  I still haven't started one myself. Time is running short now.  I can't seem to come up with an idea that I want to pursue.  My best thought thus far involves sock puppets.  But when I envision the movie, it sucks.  The new volleyball league has started up and my team p[layed its first game last night.  We got beat, but almost won the second game.  My team is one of the few that is not stacked with good players.  So, we will have a rough go of it, but it'll still be fun.  Yesterday marked one month from when the first plane is scheduled to arrive.  There around 120 people leaving and 300+ are coming in.  So, things will be quite different in a month.  The fresh fruit will be a welcome sight as well as new faces.   Another windy day as the returning sun starts to shake things up.

The wind was brutal today.  The windchill dipped into the -70 range for most of the day.  I was in and out of my loader all day and my hands didn't last long even with my glove liners in.  My band is playing a show Saturday night.  We had a practice last week and are having one tonight.  It's good to play the ole theremin again.  The show is doubling as a costume party too.  Hopefully lots of people will get dressed up in weird outfits, because the band is going to be looking odd for sure.  Saw some great auroras last night.  Also, I spied some color on the horizon the other day.  So, I guess the sun is really coming back.  A new volleyball league has started up, but my team has yet to take the court.  Our first game was won by forfeit and we had a bye this week.

We had a storm that lasted a day & a half the past few days and that has made for some awesome drifts around town.  Walking around today in the drifts reminded me of the south pole.  Lots of drifts in that neighborhood.   The 4th of July party has been postponed until tomorrow night, so that we can dig out the town today.   Our clown balloon / darrt booth is shaping up nicely.  My friend made the Jell-o shots last night, we've requested what we need table wise, so we are ready to go.  We've even got some hokey prizes to hand out.  The recreation department provides each booth with a real prize in the form of a gift certifiacte to one of the businesses in Christchurch.  Dinner, a day at the spa or something  along those lines.  So, with the gift certificate, the Jell-o shots and a mini bar, who is going to be able to resist the pull of the clowns?   Not many is my guess.
