Frozen Dishes : life after the ice

a recently retired antarctic worker trying to readjust to life on the outside

The martini party was a big success.  The recreation department transformed one of the bars into a cool looking lounge.  They hauled a bunch of couches in and set up red lights.  One could barely recognize the place.  There was a diverse drink menu with many types of martinis available as well as some other cocktails.  And there were even two waiters floating around.  The jazz band sounded awesome too.  A fun night all around.  Speaking of fun nights, tomorrow is bingo.  The fun part being that Boozy is hosting.  I warned the person in charge about the chaos that might break out, but she is sure it is the right thing to do.  We shall see how this bingo crowd reacts to Boozy.  I've been to bingo a few times this season and they seem pretty serious about it, which is not a good sign.  Oh well, it'll be interesting in the least.  Broke even last night at the poker table, a step in the right direction.

My bowling team won last night, but due to a scoring mistake by us we initially thought we had lost by two pins.  A recount by the person that runs the league this morning proved we had actually won by 10 pins.  A close game either way. The team we bowled against was named "chicks with balls".  A fun team to bowl with.  They liked the taunting signs we posted in their offices too.  Which is good, because we posted a lot.  Instead of hitting the offices during lunch we decided to do it after work.  The reason being the target offices were spread all over town, so we needed extra time.  Tonight there is a martini party complete with a jazz band playing.  Should be a grand time.  Tomorrow I'm planning on making a movie.  Hopefully I'll get some people to join in.

We beat up on the firehouse bowling team last Friday.  No real thanks to me though.  I bowled my worst game of the season posting a 105, making me the lowest bowler on my team.  That sucked.   I'm due for a good game and this week looks to be a perfect time for it.  The good news about the game was that my mohawk finally stood straight up with four spikes. (pictures soon, really)  I had a friend of mine come over and she whipped up the perfect gelatin mix.  It was like cement in my hair.   I kept the goop in my hair for a party the following night.  It was a time travelers party and I went as 2 days from now man. I didn't want to be from too far in the future or people would've hassled me for answers to all sorts of questions.  All I could tell them was Monday was a long day.  I  found a silver sauna exercise suit at the pole last year and brought it down here with me.  It looked like a futuristic suit.  I had never worn one of those things before and most likely won't again.  They are very effective.  I was sweating up a storm just hanging out at the party.  I can only imagine how much water weight one could drop if you worked out in one of those.  A friend of mine here was a wrestler and he said they used to use those.  At least until they were banned.  After the party I attempted to wash out the gelatin.  Most of it came out, but a few patches remained.  After work yesterday I spent some time in the shower getting the last few bits out.  I didn't lose too much hair in the process either, so that was a bonus.  We are  having a film festival towards the end of the winter.  I've got a few ideas, but nothing has really jumped out at me yet.

Finally got some decent sleep last night.  It had been a while since I had.  Mainly due to my going out and staying up late, but also there were nights I would go to bed early and just not sleep.  Last week we had another close bowling night.  We left thinking we had pulled off a three pin victory, but it turned out that the scores were off and we had actually lost by seven pins.  We didn't find out until the next day.  The other team had bought us a round of drinks, so it looks like we owe them a round.  I personally bowled lousy.  We did make some more good signs to put up though.  So, at least our paper campaign was a success.  This was the first team to post signs up for us too.  I volunteered in the galley Saturday night.  Worked the dinner shift in the pots room.  Not too bad and it was fun to mess with the cooks all night.  One of them is a guy I lived with one summer in Denver.  I hid their water bottles.  One I put in the freezer and the other I placed outside on the loading dock.  They could not find the one on the dock.  I showed him where it was as I was leaving.  I missed doing my radio show last week because I went over to the New Zealand base for dinner.  It was a buddy's birthday and they invited him and a few guests over the hill for a meal.  I'll be in the studio tomorrow night to spin some records for sure.  We had a dodge ball league start up this past weekend.  I'm not on a team, but I might have to be a ref just so I can see the madness.  My friend's book "Big Dead Place" just came out.  It's a look into the world of being an employee down here.  I've heard nothing but good reviews from my other friends that have read it.  I'll be getting a copy when the planes come back in August.  Looking forward to reading it.  I still have yet to win at a poker night.  I guess my luck with cards is better at the pole than here.  There is a game tonight, but I'm unsure if I want to attend.

I had a stellar end to the week last week.  First off it was a two day weekend, so that alone made it awesome.  Cinco de Mayo was a fun night.  There was a party with tasty margaritas provided.   Friday I attended the improv workshop and that was entertaining.  Then after the class it was time to bowl. We rolled against one of the better teams in the league.  We pulled off the upset and I had my best game of the season yet.  Bowled a 171.  High bowler on my team finally.  Later that night I got to kiss a girl I've been flirting with for a while.  That's always fun.  She initiated the smooching, which is fine with me.   Not sure if this will lead anywhere, but it was a grand time nonetheless.  Very cute is this gal.  Saturday was a mellow day off and some folks threw a toga party later that night.  Always fun to put on a toga I think.  Plus, Saturday night was the first time we've had live bands play this winter.  There were two bands that played and it was nice to see some live music again.   The toga party was great and there were even some chariot races.  People getting pulled down the hall on rollers.  Lots of spills, but no damage or injuries, besides carpet burns.   I didn't do much on Sunday.  Just took it eay.  Played some video games, watched a few movies and got to talk to my folks at home.

Hola.  Happy Cino de Mayo.  We had a fun party last night and yes plenty of tequilla was consumed.  Tonight we have a bolwing match and that of course will be entertaining.  The other team is one of the top teams, so our chance of victory are not good.  But, we've been harrassing them all week nonetheless and are planning a lunch time raid on their office.  We'll be posting some signs for them to enjoy after lunch.  Plus, they always drive their work truck to lunch, so we'll be playing that a visit too.  Two day weekend for us this weekend.  Everyone is of course excited about that.  Got to run on a work task.  Science support is a busy game.
