Frozen Dishes : life after the ice

a recently retired antarctic worker trying to readjust to life on the outside

Bowled for first time this season last night.  It was not pretty.  Didn't even crack the 100 barrier.  It's good for me to work these kinks out now rather when the league starts up though.  Of course for league games I am usually more intoxicated than I was last night.  That might've been part of the problem.  I've moved all my stuff into my new room and am staying there now.  I still need to get a few things arranged the way I want and give it a good deep clean, but for the most part my room is ready to go.   Another windy day, but the temps aren't too bad.  It's -27 with the wind chill, so not too bad.

In case I haven't explained my new job this winter here goes:  I am no longer slaving away in the wonderful world of food service. This time around I'll be working in the supply department.  Specifically in the carpentry shop.  We deliver any building supplies people need.  We have a fun crew up here, so that will make for a good winter.  I'm getting more comfortable driving the loader again and have not dropped a box in a few days.  Oh, and I'm at McMurdo this winter too.  The Pole is 700 miles south (of course) from here.  I have a few friends down there, so I'll be able to keep up with the  gossip.

Finally the weekend is here.  Tonight they are showing this summer season's south pole film festival.  I've heard good things about it.  We are planning on getting one organized this winter here as well.  I'll have to think of a good movie to make.  Some folks have said I need to do a Honey Bear part II, but I'm not sure.  I found out what room I'll be calling home this winter the other day.  I got the building and location I was hoping for so I am happy.  My window faces out to the bar, so there could be some entertaining moments to view at closing time.   Well, just about quitting time and I need to park my loader.

Slowly I am settling in to being back in mcmurdo.  Yesterday was a balmy day.  Not much wind and the temperature even crested the +30.  Yep, this is not the pole.  Yesterday was a long day in the loader for me.  Couldn't seem to get any boxes off of my forks.  I tipped a few crates over too.  Ended the day helping load 20,000 pounds of chicken into the freezer, which was a nice break from driving.  Today is quite windy though and that causes severe dust storms.  Big day today actually.  They are blasting out the posts on the ice pier.  Always fun to watch explsions on the pier.   And to close the day off we are having our first winter-over town meeting.  A good time to look around the room to see who'll be left when the sun goes down.  And of course the perfect time to see which ladies will be here as well.  Started the toast list last night.  At the meeting I'll also get a chance to find potential toast list makers.

Well, here I sit in New Zealand.  Just got off the plane a few hours ago.  Tomorrow afternoon I get the pleasure of trying all my ECW gear on to make sure it fits.  Then we are scheduled to fly out on Friday.  Naturally everyone is hoping for a weather delay or a broken plane delay.  I had a great time in CO before leaving Monday morning.  Saw some old friends and just relaxed.  I didn't get to see everyone I wanted to, so that was a bummer.  Time for me to wash off the pane dirt and take a quick power nap.
