Frozen Dishes : life after the ice

Howard asked me why I keep going back to the ice, adding that it really must do something for me. He was right, I love it there indeed. Antarctica is a beautiful place. I'll never get over looking around in awe of where I'm at. But, beyond it's obvious aesthetic beauty it is also a beautiful place in the sense of what it can do for people. It's a place where one is forced to take time off from the every day hustle and bustle of every day life and get refocused on their life. Lots of time to think. An ideal place to try things one might not have had the chance, or perhaps the guts to do otherwise. You can do whatever you want there and won't be judged. I've been in various bands there (theremin player by nature), a Shakespearean play (much to do about nothing), made several short films with friends, read a lot of books on my to read list and I've also done the improv group which is quite fun. It's a place where you meet some of the most incredible people and due to the prison like quality of the place, you really get a chance to know them. Also a great place to experiement with different looks for yourself, without really caring how stupid you look. As I mentioned a few days ago, there is very little vanity down there. Some people have compared it to college, except you go to work not classes. And there is definitely that party quality to it. Of course working there has also afforded me the chance to travel around the world. I mean you've got to work somewhere, might as well be at the bottom of the world.

Happy 2005 to all. Not much happening around the D.C. area with me. Just doing some last minute things before I fly to Seattle on Monday. A short stop there and then a weekend stopover in Portland and finally to Denver. I'm planning on visiting Vegas and San Franciso before going back down to the ice too. I leave for mcmurdo in late January, so I've got a few more days of freedom left. I'm still having seperation pains from the Australian beaches. I'll be heading back that way for sure next time.
