Frozen Dishes : life after the ice

a recently retired antarctic worker trying to readjust to life on the outside

Another rainy day in Sydney.  We are not complaining, but the locals are.  They don't know how it feels to miss the rain for a year I suppose.  Today we are planning on heading to some thrift shops to check out the local goods.  Hopefully I'll find some cool shirts.  Thai food is on tap for tonight.  That should prove yummy.  Lost my bank machine card yesterday.  That is a pain in the ass.  I knew I shoul'dve gotten a wallet in NZ.  Hindsight rears its ugly head once again.

I'm starting to get used to being in a big city again. At first it was a tad overwhelming. All the cars and crowds of people. Seeing all the lovely ladies again was naturally very nice, but also initially shocking. The band show the other night was fabulous. Those guys sounded great. Still undecided on a name. They will be moving to New York next year, so hopefully they will make it big. My friend that we are visiting here is moving to New York (her boyfriend is the bass player) to pursue acting and I know she will get some good roles. We finally got some rain on Friday night. We were at our friend's house for a party and spent some time just standing the back yard in the rain. It felt amazing getting rained on again. It was a warm night, so we hiked around in the rain for a half hour or so. Today we are getting a break from the hot sun thanks to some clouds. Well, time to get some lunch.

Woke up today and headed to the beach. Dare I say topless sunbathers. Rough living indeed.  Still trying to keep from burning.  Band show tonight.  We've got to figure out the bus route this afternoon.  Apparently we will be needing to switch buses a few times.  Should be a grand time though.

Sydney is fantastic.  I got a tad sun burnt the other day, as my south pole skin is still quite fragile.  I put on plenty of sunscreen, but I still got a little burnt.  Today we are getting a little rain, which is awesome.  I always miss the rain while I'm down on the ice.  My friend we are meeting here has already landed a role in a play, so she won't have as much free time as we'd hoped.  But, I'll be around long enough to see her on the stage, so that will be really cool.  Her boyfriend is in a band and they are having a CD release party this Wednesday, so that should be good times.  We are helping them come up with a new band name too.  So far none of my suggestions have made the cut.  I still think Nemu is a good one.

Well, I've finally arrived in New Zealand.   Actually I've been here about two weeks now.  Loving life.  It's great to be back in a land of warm sun and lovely ladies.  I've been taking it pretty easy as you might expect.  Eating tons of fresh food, especially sushi.  Today my friend and I leave for Sydney to meet up with a good friend we met one winter in McMurdo.  She's been over there for three years going to acting school.  She just graduated, so she should have plenty of free time to bum around with us.   Christchurch is always a great way to ease back into the workings of the real world.  You have to remember to always carry your keys, no keys at the pole, and you have  to remember that things cost money.  Went to the racetrack last weekend for the dogs and ponies.  They only had the trotters, but it was still a lot of fun. It was great because we had rented a private squite.   I ended up losing $50 overall on my bets.  Alright I need to go check out of my place.
