Frozen Dishes : life after the ice

a recently retired antarctic worker trying to readjust to life on the outside

Today is the big day.  The makeup I made came out pretty good.  It's rather greasy, but it seems like it will work.  Earlier this morning cleaned my room & gathered up all the makeup I had in my room.  Should have plenty for everyone.  A few of us are meeting at the bar around 1.  I heard a rumor of absinth being provided.  That could make things interesting.  Then the rest of the troops should be at the bar around 2.  Watched "The Road Warrior" last night.  I'll never get over all those amazing stunts they do in that flick.  Then we watched "Trees Lounge", another classic.  Well, I'm off to cook up some burritos, shower and then get clowned up.

Went to bed early last night and I finally feel rested today.  Before bed I watched "Liquid Sky", pretty odd 80's flick.  Mexican lunch today, so everyone should be happy.  Of course that means the pots & pans will be a pain, but oh well.  The glow on the horizon is getting brighter and we can now see traces of yellow and pink.  Pretty exciting.  Looking forward to this weekend.  People are jazzed up about the clown party / urinal crawl.  I'll probably lay low Saturday night, so that I'm fresh for Sunday's tom foolery.  Today on my break I'll be attempting to make some clown makeup.   We are low on white, so I got a recipe off the internet and hopefully will be able to whip some up.

Today is Satanic Sunday. No, we aren't Satan worshipers down here, we just like to call it that because it makes us laugh. Some Sundays, the Satanic ones, a few friends gather to watch really bad horror movies and make fun of them. It's great to spend an afternoon sitting around laughing with friends. One of today's features is "Children of the Corn 666". I had no idea there has been so many installments of that series made. I saw the first two a long time ago, but I assume I'll be able to pick up the story line with little trouble. Last night was the art show. There are definitely some creative souls down here. I made a few entries at the bar the night before that turned out alright. One was a large poster in praise of smoking using all the camel dollars I had been collecting from folks at the bar. It was entitled "ode to smoking". I wrote a haiku and made another picture out of toast and crayon. For dinner a few generous folks made Idian food. It was yummy. Then the band played after the meal. Danced a little, but mostly just watched them play. Once the band had ended my buddy and another guy got up and started to do a little impromtu jam. So, I grabbed the Book of Psalms that for some reason has been sitting on one of the window sills in the galley for a while now and read out of it along to the metal music they were playing. Good times.

ButterflyLane asked me in a comment what a clown party was. I figured I'd answer it here, because there might be a few others wondering the same thing.  A clown party is a simple thing, but like most simple things it is priceless.  To have one you just gather people, be sure to have copious amounts of booze on hand and provide plenty of face paint.  As the host it is best to show up already dressed like a clown or "clowned up".   Without fail people will eventually want to put the makeup on and become a clown.  Of course the booze helps some people loosen up enough to do this.  If you've never been a clown I highly recommend it.  It's amazing to see people you know well react to you in a totally different manner once they see you as a clown.  Most of my antarctic friends are used to Boozy by now, but he always seems to pull a few surprises out.  During our clown party we are watching "Shakes the Clown" and taking a tour of the various urinals around the station.  It's been suggested that we offer photo ops with Boozy at each urinal too.  Should be a fabulous day.

Today is a grand day.  It's an official hump day as this weekend we have one of our rare two day weekends.  Had a fun improv practice last night.  Only five people total in attendance, but it was still productive.  So far everyone likes the game "lines" the best.  That one is fun and a crowd pleaser too.  It was decided at the bar last night that next weekend we're going to have a clown party.  Those are always good times.  The sun is due up on Sept. 21st.  We are currently seeing a twilight-esc glow on the horizon.  Everyone is excited to see the sun again.  This week I've had trouble sleeping and that has made for some long days.  Oh well, that's the norm down here.  Sleep cycles can get crazy for no reason.  This weekend will be a good time to catch up on the Z's.

Got to love a day off.  Last night's rave was awesome.  Danced all night.  The fog machine was a bit much at times, but overall a perfect evening.  There were some sheets hung on the wall and people used glow in the dark spray paint to make graffiti.  Taking it easy today.

Happy Wednesday.  Not officially hump day due to our 6 day work week, but a good day nonetheless.  I've decided to start wearing civilian clothes on Wednesdays.  Something I started today.  I used to just wear them on Saturdays.  When I say civilian clothes I mean a tee-shirt and jeans.  Otherwise I have a galley uniform that consists of a blue polo shirt and black pants.  The uniform itself is quite comfy and I don't hate it.  But, it's nice to mix in some fun clothes too.  Today I have on one of my favorite shirts.  It's a grey shirt with a panda bear looking back at a piece of presumably panda poop, the word "enjoi" is written under the bear.  Not sure what it means, but it makes me happy.  This weekend there is going to be a rave in the gym.  Dancing is always good for the soul.  Improv has moved to Tuesday nights, because no one seemed to have the energy to do it Monday night. (especially after a two day weekend)  Last night we had a good practice.  Oh yeah "Dolly Dearest" was indeed a horrible flick, but we had fun making jokes during it.

Sunday, the glorious day off.   I'm getting ready to watch "Dolly Dearest" with a few friends.  My buddy has been reading reveiws on it and so far the outlook is grim.  One fellow said, "avoid at all costs".  But, who doesn't enjoy a cheesy horror flick?  Of course the doll we made our last film with is in attendance.  Hopefully she will learn some good evil acting tips.  I must flee as my hot cocoa and Baileys beckons - ciao

Wednesday, that means burgers for lunch.  Everyone loves Wednesdays for that reason.  Even the vegetarians seem to enjoy the meal.  Monday's improv practice was a little lacking on attendance.  Three folks slept through it.  Mondays after a two day weekend are always rough.  Out of the three new people invited one showed.  So, we had a mere six players.  But, the good news the new guy was good and had fun.  Yesterday I kicked off the booze appreciation month campaign.  Basically that involves me cutting out alcohol ads and then adding my own copy encouraging people to drink.  Down here that isn't exactly like pulling teeth.  The ads usually get a chuckle out of people and that is what I'm looking for.  Overall it breaks up the monotony of the day and I like making up the copy.  Being a dishwasher doesn't exactly afford me many creative outlets, so I need to create them for myself.  In May I started the National Start Smoking Month.  But, that campaign pretty much backfired on me.  Five people chose that month to quit smoking, thus ignoring my ads completely.  I had a hard time finding cigarette ads too.  The only source seemed to be old Playboy magazines, which are thankfully plentiful down here.

A fantastic two day weekend. Pretty mellow, just lounged, helped with the BBQ and watched a few flicks. Got some much needed rest, but could use one more day to really recharge the ole batteries. Last night a few friends I watched an episode of Buck Rogers. It was probably the worst one they made. (it was the one about the midget generals that cause trouble) I found it on a tape of random stuff I had recorded before leaving this time. Looking forward to improv tonight. Hopefully those people that were thinking of coming will show up. I was offered a job in mcmurdo for next winter a few days ago. I accepted it. I'll be working in the supply department this time around, so no more ice cream machine woes.  I've got a bunch of friends that will be there from past seasons together, so it should prove quite entertaining. Plus, one more bank account boost before making my move to CA will be nice.
